Everybody wants to have pearly white teeth. This doesn't come as a surprise because a smile leaves quite an impression and what better way to make an impression than by flashing your pearly whites. However, teeth come in various shades and can change due to different factors. According to the Academy of General Dentistry, teeth come in many shades and can change color from a variety of causes.

The tooth’s pigment is most susceptible to discoloration as the enamel develops. According to Howard S. Glazer, DDS, FAGD, and Academy of General Dentistry spokesperson, “White, bright teeth certainly help maintain a youthful appearance." The Academy of General Dentistry is an organization of general dentists dedicated to continuing education and reliable consumer information.

There are various factors that affect the pigment of a person’s teeth. Among them are:

  • Teeth pigment may change due to stains from food and drinks, becoming darker over time, usually leading to yellowish or orange-hued teeth. Coffee and tea are known to stain teeth temporarily.
  • Ill health and sickness may lead to the discoloration of the dentin and enamel.
  • Heredity also plays a role in the pigment and hue of the teeth
  • In rare cases, injury can discolor either dentin or enamel.
  • A mother’s intake of certain antibiotics during pregnancy can also lead to teeth discoloration. In some cases, medications from the tetracycline family are known to cause brown or gray discoloration of the baby's tooth enamel
  • A child’s intake of the same medicine during the period of permanent tooth development, usually before the age of 8 years, may induce similar discoloration of the permanent teeth.
There are options and procedures that may help remedy teeth discoloration. "With today's techniques and materials, we can change the color of a patient's teeth to provide a more healthy, youthful appearance," according to Dr. Glazer. There are various tooth whitening products which would improve enamel color. Severe cases may require enamel-bonding procedures for good aesthetic results. Consult with your dentist to discuss treatment options.
