Dental Cavities are also known as tooth decay or cavities. People whose teeth are often exposed to foods that contain carbohydrates or starches and sugar are prone to tooth decay and cavities. Some of the examples of these foods are soda pop, candies, ice creams, cakes, and even milk, fruits, vegetables and juices. These classes of food contain natural bacteria that form a plaque inside your mouth. Plaques that are left in your mouth create acid. These acids, when dissolved in the mineral structure of your teeth damage the tooth enamel and soon produce tooth decay that weakens your teeth. Unlike other type of dental problems, tooth decay and cavities can last through a lifetime. However, there are different ways to prevent tooth decay and cavities.

Tooth decay and cavities can be prevented in many ways. One of the many ways to prevent cavities is by means of your own saliva. The saliva in your mouth counteracts the acids formed by plaque that is why most of the dentists suggest chewing a gum that contains no sugar. This sugarless gum arouses the flow of your saliva. However, saliva itself is not enough to fight tooth decay. One of the simplest ways to avoid tooth decay and cavities is by means of dietary modifications. Always remember that that food which contains sugar and starch are the very first reason why your teeth are at the risk of tooth decay. Avoiding sweets and snacks between meals can help you fight cavities. Personal hygiene care consisting of proper brushing and flossing daily can also minimize the causes of cavities. Most of the dentists agree that most of the people do not know how to properly brush their teeth. Brushing your teeth twice a day can help you avoid cavities. The proper brushing includes holding your brush at a 45-degree angle, brushing inside, outside and between your teeth; brush your teeth three to four minutes, make sure to use soft bristle brush, and lastly use tooth paste that contains fluoride. And finally visiting your dentist every six months will help you know the condition of your teeth. Check-ups and professional cleanings may help you avoid tooth decay.

Always remember that tooth decay is a serious problem that if neglected, can lead to root canal infection, permanent deterioration of decayed tooth substance and even loss of the teeth.
