Anesthesia means the process of blocking the perception of pain and other sensations. It is more comfortable for the patient having a surgery to undergo the process with anesthesia, especially in dental procedures. Mostly, patients in dental clinics are afraid of the dental procedure, which is why many of our dentists suggest you to have an anesthesia. The types of anesthesia required for your dental procedure have a variety of classes that depends on what dental medication you will undergo.

In some cases, patients may sometimes ask, “do I really need to take anesthesia?” Or, “does this anesthesia have no side effect?” Patients are sometimes afraid to be a candidate for dental anesthesia. These patients need not to be afraid of asking things to their dentist because it is you and your dentist that will decide on what level of anesthesia will be fit for you. Although some patients are afraid of anesthesia, many patients prefer to have a higher dose of it. However, taking a high dose of anesthesia is mostly required for children and people with dental phobia; it is also required for those patients with special needs like mental retardation. This proves that taking anesthesia is mostly applied by the dentist depending on the preference of the patient.

The level of anesthesia depends on what condition and dental procedure the patient may undergo. Local anesthesia is used to numb a certain area in your mouth while having dental procedures. This type of anesthesia is applied by means of injection. Another level of anesthesia is the conscious sedation; this anesthesia includes nitrous oxide or a sedative, in combination with a local anesthetic. This level of anesthesia will make you calm yet responsive to speech and touch during the treatment. Another is the deep sedation or the general anesthesia. This level of anesthesia will make the patient unable to respond even in verbal commands during the procedure.

Before receiving anesthesia, your dentist will ask you questions about your past and present conditions. Your past and present health conditions will determined what level of anesthesia you should take and if it safe for you to take anesthesia.

Taking anesthesia is safe especially when it is administered by a trained anesthesia provider. The most effective way is for you to have a good communication with your dentist.
