Isaac Van Nuys founded the San Fernando Homestead Association in the year 1869. Isaac Van Nuys is also responsible for building the first wood frame house in the San Fernando Valley in year 1872. In the early years the San Fernando Homestead Association in the early years acquired much of land that now makes up the community.

Van Nuys was before a home for the major manufacturing plant of Chevrolet (a brand of automobile, now a division of General Motors, it is the highest selling GM marque). Today a shopping mall called "The Plant" is standing exactly at the site where the plant used to stand. The mall replaced the manufacturing plant after it was dismantled decades ago.

It has two parallel Asphalted runways. The first runway covers 8,001 x 150 ft. (2,439 x 46 m) of space and the second covers 4,011 x 75 ft. (1,223 x 23 m) of space. The Airport is known to many because of the convenience and anonymity it offers. Many Hollywood celebrities, politicians, and business executives use the airport when traveling around the world. The Van Nuys Airport is only used by private, chartered, and small commercial aircraft. The Los Angeles World Airports is the sole operator of the said Airport. The Los Angeles International Airport is also the owner of FlyAway Bus. The FlyAway Bus in Van Nuys offers a land transportation services. Its shuttle bus operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Its fare price is very affordable ranging from $3 one-way, $6 round-trip, and $2 each way for children aged 2-12. The FlyAway Bus in Van Nuys has an open- air parking lots and a multi-story parking garage.
The Japanese Garden is a famous 6.5 acres (26,000 m²) landscape in Van Neys. The Japanese Garden in Van Nuys, California was designed by Koichi Kawana. The garden was designed and constructed between the year of 1980 and 1983. Its formal dedication took place on June 18, 1984. The Garden offers a different kind of ambiance. The Sepulveda Dam was built to control floods. It is also one of the notable locations found in Van Nuys. The Sepulveda Dam was built in the year 1941. It is one of the very successful projects of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Sepulveda Basin can be found behind the Sepulveda Dam.
