History
Simi Valley is a prosperous incorporated city situated in the southeast corner of Ventura County, California in the United States of America. Simi Valley is approximately forty-five minutes northwest of Los Angeles, and forty minutes east of Ventura. The city of Simi Valley is located between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, at an elevation of 700 - 1, 100 feet above sea level. Simi Valley is considered as the fourth largest of Ventura County's ten cities.

The first inhabitants of Simi Valley were the Chumash Indians. They had a plentiful supply of fish from the ocean. Some writers believed that the name Simi came from the Chumash word “Shimiji," which means little white clouds. During the Spanish period, within Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, El Rancho Simi was considered as the earliest Spanish colonial land grant. By 1795, it was given to Santiago Pico and his partner Luis Pena. When Mexico gained independence from Spain, the land was given out much more freely. By the 1860’s and 1870’s few Americans started to settle in the city of Simi Valley. They raised livestock like sheep and cattle and planted grains. By the 1880’s, complete settlement started. The Simi Land and Water Company was developed, as well as a large hotel. Sooner there were four small settlements in the valley. The town of Simi or the Colony was the first one with its postal address as Simiopolis, soon shortened to Simi. By the next decade, Southern Pacific Railroad decided to build a tunnel through Santa Susana Mountains, which made a depot necessary in the area. The depot was finished first at the crossroads of Tapo Streets and Los Angeles Avenue. By 1904, the tunnel was ready for use and became the main line of the railroad. The Community Center was formed in the mid 1920’s, which became the center for most of the social and cultural activities of the community. The Simi Women’s Club building was transferred nearby in the middle of the valley. A large cement church was also built. Church Street, School Street and Deodora Street were among the street names that came into existence. Simi Valley was incorporated in October 10, 1969.
