History
Sherman Oaks is a small suburban area located in the city of Los Angeles, California. It is an 8.1-square-mile district which is a part of San Fernando. The San Fernando is an urbanized valley located in the Southern part of California. It is a valley rich in history and scenic attractions. One of the beautiful places found in this valley is the Sherman Oaks. Sherman Oaks is one of the many communities of San Fernando which can be described as small yet prosperous. It is an affluent area with lots of attractions.
The area of Sherman Oaks was known to many as the home of the Sherman Oaks Galleria. It is one of the first valley communities to experience a rapid and extensive real estate expansion. It is widely known to many as the undisputed residence of the Valley Girl. This cultural label was popularized by the song and movie with the same title shown in the year 1983. Going back in the year 1913, the rapid development of the Sherman Oaks was clearly foreseen. Los Angeles Suburban Homes Co. purchased 47,500 acres of the southeast Valley in the year 1910. In the year 1911, Tract 1000, a subdivision map was filed with the county. Soon after, a man named Gen. Moses Hazeltine Sherman, one of the partners to the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company, purchased a portion of the said parcel of land. This portion of land purchased by Gen. Moses Hazeltine Sherman had an area of 1000 acres. He bought the land for himself. Sherman Oaks lies adjacent to a number of highly acclaimed cities; among them are Studio City, Van Nuys and Beverly Hills. The latter cities are within easy reach when one passes through the hills adjoining the Sherman Oaks with Beverly Hills.
During the following decades, in the year 1927, Gen. Moses Hazeltine Sherman subdivided his estate. He sold parcels of land for the price of $780 an acre. As the years went by, famous celebrities came and chose to reside in the community of Sherman Oaks. These famous celebrities included Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, Lou Costello, Marsha Hunt, Burt Kennedy and Hector Elizondo. A big number of these celebrities are often seen in different places in Sherman Oaks, typical of these places are he gas station, the cleaners or at the local Starbucks. Others like Harry Hamlin of LaLaw fame and Linda Gray, reside and have their own businesses in Sherman Oaks. The latter are clothing store business entrepreneurs.
Sherman Oaks has a total land area of only 4.61 square miles (11.94 square kilometers), and there is no inland water in Sherman Oaks.
Census
Based on the year 2000 statistics conducted by the United States census bureau, Sherman Oaks had a population of 28,601. The population density per square mile was 6,203.0. Among the entire population were people under the age of 18 making up 14.19%; and there were people over the age of 64 making up 12.81%. The population figure of Sherman oaks was divided into following races: White Alone, 23,797 (83.20% ); White Alone - Not Hispanic or Latino, 22,471 (78.57%); Black or African American Alone, 1,072 (3.75%); American Indian & Alaska Native Alone, 79(0.28%); Asian Alone, 1,545 (5.40%); Native Hawaiian & Other Pacific Islander Alone, 15 (0.05%); Some Other Race Alone, 892 (3.12%); Population of Two or More Races, 1,201 (4.20%); and Hispanic or Latino, 2,437 (8.52%).
Being a part of the city of Los Angeles the suburban community of Sherman Oaks is represented by a sole Councilwoman and a sole Councilman in the city government of Los Angeles. Councilwoman Wendy Greuel represents the Second District of Los Angeles of which Sherman Oaks forms a part. Wendy Greuel has focused much of her time on public safety, the environment, economic issues, transportation, and neighborhood services. Wendy Greuel developed the Stolen Vehicle Recovery Program, which allows Department of Transportation officers to tow stolen vehicles instead of Los Angeles Policemen. Councilman Jack Weiss is also representing Sherman Oaks in 5th district of Los Angeles City. Jack Weiss is active in numerous civic and professional organizations. He serves on the Southwest Regional Board of the Anti-Defamation League. He is a founding member of the Cesar E. Chavez Foundation, a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy, the Los Angeles Conservancy, the Westside Urban Forum, Heal the Bay, and Los Angeles County Young Democrats, and has served on many local bodies and bar committees.
Sherman Oaks is an exclusive community. It was recently well known primarily because it is home for the Sherman Oaks Galleria. Sherman Oaks Galleria is situated at the corner of Ventura and Sepulveda Boulevards. It is a huge and famous Shopping mall known to many as the meeting place of the "Valley girls." The Sherman Oaks Galleria became less famous as the time went by. In the year 1999 Sherman Oaks Galleria was closed and later converted into a sprawling office complex. Another famous shopping mall today in Sherman Oaks, which is frequented by many people, is the Westfield Fashion Square (formerly known as Sherman Oaks Fashion Square).there is also variety boutiques and restaurants located throughout Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. Sherman Oaks is also known for Sunkist Growers, Incorporated. This company which is one of the America's oldest and largest agricultural cooperatives was established in Sherman Oaks way back in the year 1893.
