History
Santa Clara is a welcoming city situated in the center of Silicon Valley in Santa Clara County of California in the United States of America. The city of Santa Clara is at the southern point of San Francisco Bay and northwest of San Jose. It is a flourishing industrial, commercial and residential community.

The fruitful Santa Clara Valley was visited by Jose Francisco Ortega in 1769. Ortega was the first European who visited the place as part of his exploratory survey for the Portola-Serra party. The Indians, known as Los Costanos by the Spanish or Ohlone Native Americans, inhabited the area. As part of the Spanish’s colonization of California, a chain of 21 churches known as missions were established. To establish the eighth mission, the Franciscan priests chose the prosperous valley discovered by Ortega. The mission was founded by January 12, 1777 and named Mission Santa Clara de Asis after Saint Clare. The Mexicans gained independence from Spain by the year 1821; this does not have an affect on the way the missions were operated. Baptism and conversion to Christianity was still compulsory for Ohlones. By 1836, ruling of Mission Santa Clara was turned over to civil commissioners who did not return the land to the native people. By 1839, the Mexican governor began giving out land grants to a variety of favored people. The land was used for enormous ranches and large numbers of cattle were raised over the area.

By the 1840's, the American frontier had expanded to California and new settlers began arriving in the area. The raising of the American flag over Monterey in July of 1846 was a symbol of the fact that the lands of California had passed from the hands of Mexico to the United States. California became a state in 1850. By the decade of 1850’s, Santa Clara started to develop as a recognizable small town. The town was planned by William Campbell into lots one hundred yards square, from which one lot was given to each citizen, who should build a house on it within three months or otherwise he will lose the property. Establishments of several hotels, commercial businesses, a schoolhouse and a church soon followed. By July 5, 1852 Santa Clara was incorporated as a town and turned into a sate-chartered city by 1862. Seed, fruit and manufacturing industries soon emerged and business companies began to develop. Wampach Tannery (which became Eberhard Tannery), Pacific Manufacturing Company, J. M. Kimberlin and Co., C. C. Morse and Company and Pratt-Low Preserving Company were among the companies that were established from the year 1849 to the year 1905. By 1950, the technology of semiconductor chip was developed which led to an electronic industry for Santa Clara. Santa Clara has become a productive and a thriving city.

Santa Clara has a population of 102, 361 people and 38, 526 households. The racial description of the population consisted of 55.59% White, 2.29% Black or African American, 0.53% Native American, 29.27% Asian, 0.43% Pacific Islander, 6.94% from other races, and 4.95% from two or more races. The population also has 15.99% Hispanic or Latino. This was according to the year 2000 statistics of the United States Census Bureau. The city has a total area of 47.6 square kilometers which is all land. Santa Clara is specifically located at 37°21′16″N, 121°58′9″W (37.354441, -121.969119).
