History
Santa Barbara is a city with many scenic attractions and historical landmarks as well as a pleasantly mild temperate or Mediterranean climate. Because of this Santa Barbara is also known as "The American Riviera."

Santa Barbara is situated at southwestern coast of California, Bordered in the north by San Luis Obispo, in the west and the south by Pacific Ocean, on the northeast by Kern County, and on the east by Ventura County. The exact coordinates of Santa Barbara city is 34.425804° north latitude and 119.714189° west longitude.

As of the year 2000 census conducted by the United States census bureau, the population of Santa Barbara was 92,325. This number of population was composed of 45,454 (49.2%) males and 46,871 (50.8%) females. During the year 2005 the said bureau published an updated estimate of population in Santa Barbara; according to them the population figures has fallen to 85,899 (-7.0% change).

There were 35,605 Households in Santa Barbara city. Of this number 24.3% had children less than 18 years of age living in the household. Married couples who are living together comprised 39.8%. Households with a female householder and no husband comprised 9.5%. Household who were non-families comprised 46.8%. Households composed of individuals comprised 32.9%. Households composed of individuals who were 65 years or older and living alone comprised 11.4%.

The population of the city of Santa Barbara was composed of various races. the greatest portion was composed of White Non-Hispanic origins, with a percentage of 58.3%; Hispanic, with a percentage of 35.0%; Other races, 16.4%; Two or more races, 3.8%; American Indian, 1.9%; Black or African American, 1.8%; Japanese, 0.7%; and Chinese, with a percentage of 0.6%.

The Ancestries among the inhabitants of Santa Barbara can be traced back to the following: German (11.4%), English (10.8%), Irish (8.9%), Italian (4.7%), French (3.3%), and United States (2.7%). A typical household in Santa Barbara had a median income of $47,498, while a typical family had a median income of $57,880. The median income for males was $37,116 compared to that for females which was $31,911.

Santa Barbara is also a place where people have access to large media publications. One of Santa Barbara City's two daily news papers is The Santa Barbara News-Press. The Santa Barbara News-Press is a broadsheet newspaper which circulates about 45,000 copies in the entire Santa Barbara daily. It is claimed to be the oldest newspaper in circulation today in Santa Barbara. It has been widely read by the residents since May 30, 1868. The Santa Barbara News-Press was originally owned by New York Times Company until it was sold in the year 2000. Today The Santa Barbara News-Press is owned by a local resident and environmentalist named Wendy P. McCaw. The other popular newspaper in Santa Barbara is the Santa Barbara Daily Sound. The Santa Barbara Daily Sound is a free newspaper which is published 5 days a week. It is available in every newspaper rack and in stores, coffee shops, restaurants, schools and major workplaces. The Santa Barbara Daily Sound is independently owned by another resident of the city of Santa Barbara named Jeramy Gordon.

Santa Barbara is also a community which is home for many artistic landmarks, like the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is located in downtown Santa Barbara, California at 1130 State Street. It is a museum founded in 1941. It houses permanent and special collections which include Asian, American, and European art that spans 4,000 years from ancient to modern. Today The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is ranked among the greatest 10 regional art museums in the United States. Santa Barbara city is also home for University Art Museum in the University of California, Santa Barbara Campus.

The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is also located in the city of Santa Barbara behind the famous Santa Barbara Mission. Having been founded in 1960, it is now the oldest museum in Santa Barbara, California, USA. This oldest museum is known for its natural history exhibits displaying over 3 million specimens of birds, mammals, and marine life; as well as local geology, and Chumash Indian anthropology giving accounts on their origin early development and culture. The Mission sits on a rise overlooking both the City of Santa Barbara and the Pacific Ocean. It was the tenth mission founded, and was named for Saint Barbara of Greece, Virgin and Martyr.
