The city of San Luis Obispo had its beginning during the founding of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa in 1772 by Father Junipero Serra as the fifth mission in the Californian chain of 21 missions. This fact makes San Luis Obispo one of California’s oldest communities. The city of San Luis Obispo was first incorporated on February 16, 1856 as a General Law City. San Luis Obispo became a Charter City on May 1, 1876. San Luis Obispo currently celebrates its 150 th anniversary.
Events
A notable event in San Luis Obispo is the Farmers Market. San Luis Obispo’s Farmers Market was introduced in 1983 to cater to the city’s dominant collegiate residents. San Luis Obispo’s Farmers Market is held downtown every Thursday year-round. About three quarters of a mile of Higuera Street is closed to vehicles to better facilitate the festival. San Luis Obispo’s Farmers Market features live entertainment and local farmers and vendors who sell their products.
The city is home to many notable tourist spots. The carefully restored Mission San Luis Obispo Tolosa can be found at the heart of downtown San Luis Obispo. The Mission San Luis Obispo is one of the oldest buildings in California, since it was originally built in the late 18 th century, and is a superb example of Spanish Mission architecture.
Another notable tourist spot near the city of San Luis Obispo is the Hearst Castle. The vast estate once belonged to publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. Hearst Castle was built on a 40,000 acre ranch that was purchased by Hearst’s father in 1865. William Hearst inherited the ranch when his mother died in 1919 and the ranch has grown to 250,000 acres. Construction of the estate’s various facilities began on the same year and continued through 1947. The Estate was donated to the state of California in 1957, under the condition that the Hearst Family would be able to use it whenever they wished. It can be found 43 miles from San Luis Obispo and is accessible via reservation on a scheduled tour bus.
Yet another notable tourist spot in San Luis Obispo is the Madonna Inn. The Madonna Inn is an eccentric motel in San Luis Obispo. It opened for business in 1958 and is a monument to perpetual kitsch. The Madonna Inn is made up of 109 rooms, each with an unusual name. Yahoo, Love Nest, and Cloud Nine are examples of the Madonna’s room names. The Madonna Inn also features a rock waterfall urinal which is frequented by tourists, much to the chagrin of males who need to use the facility.
Last, but not the least, is the development pf Edna Valley as a well-known wine region. The valley can be found just south of San Luis Obispo.

San Luis Abispo’s Cal Poly is renowned for its engineering, agricultural, and business courses. San Luis Obispo’s Cal Poly is among the six Polytechnic universities in the United States. San Luis Obispo’s Cal Poly was established in 1901 and held its first classes on September 30, 1903.
