History
San Bernardino is a prosperous city located at the foot of the San Bernardino Mountains in San Bernardino County of California in the United States of America. San Bernardino has a variety of landscapes, from desert to mountain peaks and astonishing lakes.
It was believed that the first inhabitants of San Bernardino were the Native American Tribes, the Serrano Indians who lived in the valley since 1000 B.C. The Serrano Indians known as the Yuhaviatam or the People of the Pines spent their winters in the valley, and their summers in the mountains. During the early years of the 19th century, the lush valley at the foot of a mountain range was chosen as an outpost for other Spanish missionaries who traveled all over the California area preaching to a variety of Indian tribes. By the 20th of May year 1810, Father Francisco Dumetz set up an altar to convert the Indians who lived in the area. San Bernardino was the name given to the area by Father Dumetz, after the patron saint of the day in the Catholic Calendar, Saint Bernardino of Siena. By 1819, Rancho San Bernardino was established by Mission San Gabriel. By 1834, through the command of Governor Figeroa, all missions were ordered closed. During those years, haciendas were built to house the Spanish landowners and the ranchos were kept. By 1851, Mormons reached the valley and made camp at the entrance of a creek flowing through the valley of Santa Ana River. Mormons were delighted by the area’s abundance of water, dense growth of cottonwoods, willows, sycamores, mustard and wild oats that grew on the hillsides. The stream was named Lytle Creek after the leader, Captain Andrew Lytle. The Mormons built a rampart around the rancho which was named Fort San Bernardino.
By 1852, a monument on top of Mount San Bernardino was created by a United States deputy surveyor, Colonel Henry Washington. The flourished city of San Bernardino was officially incorporated by the year 1854. During the years of the 19th century, huge railway companies reached San Bernardino, changing the community into an enterprising city. The Santa Fe, Union Pacific as well as the Southern Pacific railroads made San Bernardino the center of their Southern California operations. The population of the city increased and business opportunities began to grow as well, upon which by 1910, the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce was first organized.
