History
Palm Springs is also known as "Playground of the Stars". It is a city with lots of beautiful views, and a county that is home to many communities. Palm Springs is a place for you and for your whole family. Palm Springs is a famous county surrounded by mountain ranges. It is located in Coachella Valley in California. It has a total land area of 94.2 square miles and an elevation of 466 feet above sea level.
During the early years Palm Springs was inhabited by Native Americans called Cahuilla Indians. During those years the Cahuilla tribe lived beside the sparkling waters of Palm Springs. Their primary living is by means of hunting and planting a variety of desert plants. By using plenty of instruments like bow and arrows, knife, and sticks they hunt animals like deer, bighorn sheep, rabbits, and other small animals for food. When the Spaniards came to the land, the Cahuillas were already raising different plants such as corn, squash, beans, and melons. Soon after, the Spaniards helped them in cultivating orchards. They also helped in raising cattle and horses. And soon they began to establish a close relationship with the tribe.
The Spaniards were closely allied with the Cahuilla clans of Indian Wells and San Gorgonio Pass areas. Because of this relationship, Agua Callientes maintained deep relationship with the Indians from Los Angeles. The Spaniards upheld social, religious, and economic relationships with them. The Spaniards gave Cahuillas a full control over particular lands. Each community managed individual areas used by its people. Chief Cabezon was recognized as a leader by many of the Cahuillas. Mexicans and Americans gave Chief Cabezon the authority for becoming the leader. He was recognized by many of the Cahuillas. When Chief Cabezon died, his sons became his successors and continue to exercise power over the tribe.
The Paniktum lineage of Andreas Canyon was closely related to the Kauisiktum lineage of Agua Caliente and joined them in ceremonies, along with other groups who no longer had a ceremonial leader. By the turn of the century, around the period of 1800s Agua Caliente came to be known as Palm Springs and became a focus of Cahuilla activity. By 1884, around 70 Indians were living in the Palm Springs area; in 1925, only 50 remained. Today the tribe numbers 240 members. During the years covering 1970s and 1980s, Palm Springs economic growth declined. In the 1970s a large number of retirees from different places began to move in Coachella Valley. Because of this Palm Springs began to evolve from a winter resort to a town called the retirement community.
In the 1990s the city of Palm Springs began to show signs of vast economic recovery. Structures of mid-century houses became fashionable again. The fashionable styled houses have doubled in price compared to their selling prices in the 1980s. The arrival of Indian gaming also contributes to Palm Springs' economic revival. The Indian gaming creates a broad employment base and the development of a new type of local tourism (gambling). Part of their profits was contributed to philanthropic causes and local infrastructure, such as the Palm Springs Fire Department, Palm Springs Public Library, and Boys and Girls Club of the Coachella Valley.
Because of the city's beautiful site and different style of living, palm spring became a favorite spot for senior citizens and gay community. Palm Springs also became a point of interest for international travelers, young people, and those who want to live in or retire to one of the most attractive resort in North America.
