Oxnard in early history was inhabited by a Native American tribe, the Chumash Indians. The Chumash Indians were one of the first people to settle in some places in California. Some year in the 1500s, a Portuguese explorer named Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered the city of Oxnard. In the year 1542, Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo claimed the land for Spain.
In the year 1850, the California became a U.S state. During this the area of Oxnard is a dwelling place for American farmers. The American farmers were already cultivating different agricultural products. Some of these agricultural products are the famous barley and lima beans.
The famous city of Oxnard came from the name of a famous businessman in California named Henry Oxnard. Back then, Henry Oxnard together with his three brothers named Ben, James, and Robert owns a successful sugar beet factory in Chino, California. Together they build a two-million dollar factory. The said factory became known to many places in the world and gave the town of Oxnard a vast changing towards progress. Soon after a railroad station was built to give service to the plant. This changes attracted many visitors including Chinese, Japanese, and even Mexican laborers.
In June 30, 1903, Oxnard was incorporated as a city of California. The first public library in Oxnard was opened in the year 1907. This took place in World War 2. The naval bases of Point Mugu and Port Hueneme were also established in the area to take advantage of the only major navigable port on California's coast between the Port of San Diego and San Francisco Bay, and these encouraged the development of the defense-based aerospace and communications industries.
Today there are 3 postal codes in use to designate various places in Oxnard City. These are 93030, 93033, and 93035. As of the year 2000 census conducted by the United States census bureau, the population in Oxnard, California was 170,358; with males numbering 87,090 (51.1%), and females numbering 83,268 (48.9%). A later estimate of population conducted in July 2005 by the same bureau places the total number at 183,628 (+7.8% change).
The 170,358 populace of Oxnard city was further subdivided into different races, with people of Hispanic lineage taking up a vast majority of 66.2%; White Non-Hispanic taking up 20.6%, Black or African American taking up 3.8%, other race taking up 40.4%, two or more races taking up 4.7%, and American Indian taking up 2.0%.
There are also some Asians who chose to reside in San Francisco; these are Filipinos taking up 5.1%, Japanese taking up 0.6%, and Vietnamese taking up 0.6%.
