North Hills is a strong suburban community that can be found in an urbanized valley in southern California, the San Fernando Valley. It is one of the oldest communities located in the heart of San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, California, USA. The community is known for its large lots and commercial spaces. North Hills is located in the middle of four other thriving communities: the Northridge to its west, the Panorama City to its east, the Van Nuys to its south, and Granada Hills to its north. North hills together with its neighboring community, is considered as mid valley communities.
In the early 1990s, North Hils is known to many as the Mission Acres. It was in the year 1769 that a king of Spain found a city in the Upper California. The king named Carlos the 3rd, sent a group of monks and some of his soldiers to the area. The monks, together with the soldiers scattered and scoped the area. The group was on their way to the city when they encountered the Gabrioleno Spring. The spring was named as the spring of Saint Monica, in honor of the tears shed by Saint Monica for her unruly son Augusta. This was based on one of the padres' diary. Soon after, the city was named Santa Monica even though the spring did not really take place in Santa Monica. During the year 1781, the city of Los Angeles was founded. King Carlos III gave the city several thousand acres of land. The king uses this land as a medium of payment for the people working with him. He was not generous with paying them cash, instead the king made an agreement with his workers. The agreement was this: "if you work for me I will see that you get a grant of land." During that time one of the king's soldiers named Francisco Sepulveda formally requested to the king for a land grant through Mexico City. However, the king only granted Sepulveda the use of the land until their agreement expires. This land was called "Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica".
Francisco Sepulveda together with his family settled in the land for some time. However, when the Spanish and the Mexicans had a disagreement things suddenly changed, and Mexico withdraw their support from Spain. Sepulveda did not waste his time and petitioned the government of Mexico City. He asked for the confirmation for the title of the property.
During the following years, the town existed through their agricultural products. Residents of the town started building Chicken and rabbit farms, vegetable gardens, walnut groves, and fruit trees from 1-acre plots alongside their housing residences. The agricultural activities of the town boosted the economic growth of the area. In the year 1927, residents of Mission Acres renamed the area to Sepulveda in honor of Francisco Sepulveda, an early landowner and an acting mayor of the town. Citizens of the town voted for the changing of its name. However, in the year 1992, the name Sepulveda was again replaced by a new name. This new name was carried by the town until our present time. Today the town is called as North Hills.
