By 1776, the administration of the Newport Bay area was started by the Franciscan fathers of San Juan Capistrano. According to Ellen Lee the name “Newport” was suggested by a Mrs. Perkins. Newport Landing was established on the inner shores when the steamer Vaquero enters Newport Bay. Steamer Newport was sold to Pacific Coast Steamship Co., but continues on its San Francisco-Newport run until 1889. In order to determine the feasibility of U.S. government-financed improvements to Newport Bay, a survey was administered by W.H.H. Benyuard of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in year 1887. The estimated cost was $1.2 million.
The McFaddens built an ocean wharf in the summer and fall of 1888, due to failure in acquiring a federal appropriation for the survey. By year 1889, McFadden brothers transferred their shipping business from inside the bay to new outside landing on Peninsula Oceanfront. The wharf was built by James and Robert McFadden, who shipped lumber from Northern California to settlers here. According to the Newport Beach Historical Society, the Newport was not always such an enviable place. Some parts of the Harbor, like Balboa and Lido islands were sold for $1 an acre by the state of California, it is known as a swamp and overflow land in the mid-1800.
August 1906, the residents of the booming bay town voted to incorporate Newport Beach to become a city; the result of the poll was 42 votes against 12 votes. Back then, the bay front houses was sold for an amount of as little as $500. Today, the median price of homes in Newport Beach is approximately $545,000.
A hundred years later, after the McFaddens construct the Newport Pier, the city still celebrates in its ocean roots. Tourists enjoy the entertaining Balboa bars on Balboa Island and the surfers tackling The Wedge or other amusing hot spots along the city's 6.2 miles of beaches. By the time that the three new luxury hotels opened on year 2003, it increases the Newport Beach’s reputation as a high-end tourist destination.
