The spot served as a restaurant, boys’ military school, exclusive gift shop, a tearoom and as a post office. The site was declared as a California Landmark by 1965. Due to a fire which happened during the month of April, year 1970, the museum was rebuilt and was opened on July 4, 1976. As a reminder of the Bicentennial by the Conejo Valley Bicentennial-Centennial Commission, the Tri-Village, which was made up of replicas of a pioneer home (Egbert & Frances Newberry's home in 1874), a Spanish-Mexican adobe and a Chumash Ap (tule dwelling) was developed.
