History
Hollywood is the capital of film glamour. It represents the American film and television. Hollywood is home for movies, lights, nightclubs, images of soundstage and home of simple to extraordinary people.
It is located northwest of Downtown Los Angeles, California, United States of America. It is a district whose southern border follows Melrose Avenue from Vermont Avenue west to Fairfax Avenue. The border continues along north on Fairfax, encircles east around West Hollywood along Willoughby Avenue encircling La Brea and towards west along Fountain Avenue before heading north on Laurel Canyon Boulevard into Hollywood Hills. The eastern border follows Vermont Avenue north from Melrose past Hollywood Boulevard to Franklin Avenue. Then, the border travels west along Franklin to Western Avenue, north on Western into Griffith Park.
Hollywood has a populace of 300,000. The government of Hollywood is served by an honorary mayor, whose function is ceremonial and does not hold any legal bearing.
Hollywood, during the time of Spanish explorers, was divided into two Spanish Governments. These comprise Rancho La Brea or the land to the west and Rancho Los Feliz or the land to the east. The area became an agricultural community with crops from hay and grain to pineapples and bananas in 1870. Ten years later, the two Ranchos were subdivided. Harvey Henderson Wilcox bought 160 acres of land in Rancho La Brea and the Cahuenga Pass. Wilcox had developed a grid plan for his new community covering Prospect Avenue (now Hollywood Boulevard) for his main street, and he was selling large residential lots to wealthy Midwesterners within few years.
The name Hollywood was created by the father of Hollywood, Hobart Johnstone Whitley. By 1886, together with his wife Gigi, they came up with the name “Hollywood” as they were standing on the hill overlooking the valley known today as Whitley Heights. Wilcox’s wife, Daeida, raised funds to develop library, school and churches. Prospect Avenue became a high-class residential area occupied by large Queen Anne, Mission Revival and Victorian houses. Hollywood soon became a wealthy community and was incorporated in 1903. Hollywood’s first film studio was opened in 1911 by the Nestor Company, which was located in the corner of Sunset and Grower. Movie makers soon followed through Cecil DeMille and D.W. Griffith.
Commercial buildings began to develop along Hollywood Boulevard. Soon after, residential areas along the Boulevard were replaced by commercial buildings, connecting the three corners of Highland, Cahuenga, and Vine. By 1920 and 1930, restaurants, clubs movie houses as well as banks were developed. Music recording studios as well as offices began moving to Hollywood in the 1960s. Hollywood Boulevard as a commercial and entertainment district was formally listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
