Hermosa Beach, California, is a beautiful beach located in Los Angeles County, it can be found at one mile northwest of Redondo Beach, and fifteen miles southwest of Los Angeles, California. Hermosa Beach is one of the Beach Cities (sometimes called Bay Cities) in Southern California. It has a municipal pier extending into the ocean.
Hermosa Beach, also known as "Beautiful Beach,” was once a vast sweep of rolling hills covered with fields of grain. A large number of sheep was scattered all over its land. Corrals and large barns are also over the place. Stables and farm providing shelter for the horses is also located in the town. Hermosa Beach was originally part of the ten-mile frontage of Rancho Sausal Redondo. It’s neighboring cities like Torrance, Lawndale, and Inglewood also has a portion that belongs to Rancho Sausal Redondo (which means a large circular ranch of pasture with a grove of willows on it).
Hermosa Beach is originally a Spanish Land Grant founded in 1882. The first pier in Hermosa was built in the year 1904. The pier was purely made of woods, from its leg support up to the pier itself. It extended 500 feet out into the ocean. Because the pier was constructed entirely of wood, the pier was partly washed away. In 1913 the pier was replaced with a new one. The new pier was built with asphalt (a mixture of aggregate and asphalt cement, correctly called asphaltic concrete). Small tiled pavilions were provided at intervals along the sides of the pier to afford shade for the fisherman and picnic parties.
Hermosa Avenue was the first street to be paved in Hermosa Beach. Hermosa Avenue was made of wooden planks. The walk extended the entire length of the two-mile Strand. Portions of the walkway were sometimes washed away by high tides. That is why some part of it was replaced by cement. This replacement took place in the year 1914. Auditorium building was also constructed in the same year. Various enterprises were placed in the said auditorium. Today, the Los Angeles County Life Guard Service uses the place as their home office. In the year 1926 the remaining two thousand feet of the boardwalk was also replaced by cement.
In the year 1901, Hermosa Beach Land and Water Company installed water supply for the town, with a well that was located in the north city limits. Soon after, they bought an artesian well. The company built a reservoir located outside the east end of the town.
During the early years of the Hermosa Beach, trolleys were the residents’ only way of transportation. Trolleys ran down in the middle of Hermosa Avenue to Redondo Beach. The line was known to be "Pacific Electric". In the year 1940, the rail service was ended. The Santa Fe Railway, located seven blocks from the beach is the only transportation system through Hermosa Beach. Soon after, Santa Fe Avenue was renamed as Pier Avenue. Today, a tree-lined walking/jogging path is placed from Redondo Beach through Hermosa all the way to Manhattan Beach.
On December 24, 1906 the first city election takes place. On January 14, 1907, the town was incorporated and its charter was obtained from the state. The city acquires its ownership at that time. Original deed of the city from the Hermosa Beach Land and Water Company was included. It is stated in that deed that the land was to be held as beach playground, free from commerce, and for the benefit of not only residents of Hermosa, but also for the sea lovers of Southern California.
