History
Granada Hills is located in San Fernando Valley, a residential area in southern California within the perimeter of the city of Los Angeles . The people of Los Angeles may reach Granada Hills through Ronald Reagan (CA-118) and San Diego (Interstate 405) Freeways. Balboa Boulevard, Haskell Avenues, Hayvenhurst, and Woodley, as well as Chatsworth Street, Devonshire Street, Mission Boulevard, Rinaldi Street, and San Fernando are among the thoroughfares of the city. Granada Hills is situated in north of North Hills, east of Northridge and Porter Ranch districts, and west of Mission Hills and Sylmar districts.
George K. Porter acquired Granada Hills in around 1881; he also founded the north of San Fernando Valley and one of the pioneers of the city of San Fernando. Granada Hills was used principally for farming. Having evolved from agricultural and ranching community, the remnants of former citrus groves can still be seen as small groups of orange, lemon or grapefruit trees in some residential yards. Beans and wheat are also the common crops that are planted in the area.
Granada Hills emerged from subdivision lands. Balboa and Zelzah Avenues, north from San Jose Street was bought by J.H. Moshier in 1917. Moshier is a wealthy oil man from Oklahoma. He built a huge house, dairy barns, silos and other buildings at the foot of the hills. He named his property The Sunshine Ranch. Between 1917 and 1924 most of the ranch buildings still remained and several had been converted into residences. Citrus of various kinds were also planted over 2000 acres of the ranch. In spite of this, in 1925, Mr. Moshier gets tired of his project, so the Sunshine Ranch was offered for sale. Suburban Estates, Incorporated bought the ranch. SEI is a holding company organized by Edwards and Wildey Company, which is the leading subdivider of that time. They already subdivided the town of Eagle Rock, of Glendale, and some districts in Los Angeles.
The first house in Granada Hills was built by Captain and Mrs. J.L. Miller on the corner of Kingsbury St. and White Oak Ave. During that time Capt. Butler was chief of Police in Los Angeles under Mayor Woodman. The house of Mr. and Mrs. Klissner, who lived next door to Capt. Buttler, was not fully built. Mrs. Klissner was pregnant during that time and the couple feared that the baby would arrive before the house was finally finished. This led Mr. Wildey to transfer the workmen from other houses to finish the couple's house in time. When the baby girl arrived, she was named Granada Klissner and was given a reward of $25 worth of stock in Granada Mortgage Co. for being the first child born in Granada.
Schools
Granada Hills Charter High School ( Granada Hills High School), commonly known as "GHHS", "GHCHS", or simply "Granada", is a public, charter, co-educational, secondary school consisting of students in Grades 9 through 12. The school was founded in 1961. In 1994, it became a Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) magnet school, for deaf and hard of hearing, in conjunction with the California State University, Northridge (CSUN). In 2003, Granada was awarded charter status and became a "charter" high school, allowing it to sovereignly govern itself and develop outside from the LAUSD bureaucracy, and increase student achievement. The high school generates $25-$30 million in tax revenues yearly. Before obtaining charter status, $5-$6 million was given to other schools that have performances below standard. Famous alumni of the school include actor Robert Englund, who acted as Freddy Kreuger in “Nightmare on Elm Street,” singer John Elway, and football quarterback John Elway.
John Elway Stadium, named after the same famous quarterback John Elway, was the name given to Granada sports stadium. However, in 2006 this stadium will be the home of the San Fernando Valley Quakes, the new soccer team in the United Soccer Leagues Premier Development League which is the only sports franchise in the San Fernando Valley area. Consequently, for Quakes games, the stadium will be known as the Re/Max Epicenter.

As part of the area’s recreation, Grannada Hills Theatre starts in 1980 and began the Granada Hills Woman's Club. By 1956, Jo Erickson joined the club because she was looking for a place for her training in live theatre which features drama at the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). She directed her first full length production in 1958, entitled The Women. Erickson raised money for the club’s philanthropic activities. She continued directing and after 20 years an annual production was presented as a fund raiser for the Woman's Club, with women playing all the roles. As the years passed, men were added to the casts.
A group of about 15 men and women formed The Granada Theatre. They all contributed what they had, from $25 to $100. In the form of a variety show, a charity performance was held at the Woman’s Club, and they raised $2,000. In 1980 the theatre was launched and the first play was Neil Simon's A Prisoner of Second Avenue, opening in February 1980.
