Chatsworth is a populated community that can be found in Los Angeles County, California, USA. The first inhabitants of Chatsworth were Native Americans. It was named after Chatsworth house. Chatsworth house is a large country house originally built by Elizabeth Hardwick; also known as Bess of Hardwick, the Countess of Shrewsbury. Elizabeth Hardwick was married four times. When she was fifteen years old in the year 1542, she married her first husband, the thirteen year old Robert Barlow, heir to a neighbouring estate. When Robert Barlow died because of chronic distemper, Elizabeth Hardwick became entitled to one-third of the revenues of the Barlow estate. She remained single until August 20, 1547, when she married Sir William Cavendish, an English courtier. He purchased The Chatsworth estate in the year 1549. Both of them began to build Chatsworth House in 1553.
Native Americans were the first people to settle in Chatsworth, California. Although many different Indian tribes lived in California, most of them inhabited the San Fernando Valley. The Tataviam also known as the Fernandeño, an early Indian tribe who believed to have inhabited the San Fernando Valley almost 2,000 years before the Spanish built the San Fernando Mission in 1797.
As stated above, Chatsworth is Located in Los Angeles County, northwest of San Fernando Valley. Its average County elevation is estimated at 950 Feet. Its latitude is 34.25722 and longitude of 118.60028.
As of July 14, 2006 an estimated population of 35,317 had chosen to take up residence in Chatsworth, California. A vast majority of the population in Chatsworth is Caucasoid or white Americans. Almost 26,051 white Americans choose to live in Chatsworth, California. Black population in the community is estimated at 1,052. The other remaining portion are the Hispanic and non Hispanic with an estimated population of over 5,000.
Chatsworth is home to the Dukes of Devonshire ("Devonshire" is also the name of a major street in Chatsworth).

The popular concept of the American West really fits in the view of Chatsworth.
Today Chatsworth has developed into a beautiful community. Industrial areas, sleepy home communities, large apartment complexes, large condominium complexes, quiescent parks, ranches, horse stables, horse trails, and farms are already established in the town. Shopping centers, restaurants, and a train station (half a mile east), industrial warehouses and office parks (a mile south), sleepy houses and schools, and farms half can also be seen in Chatsworth.
Chatsworth gives residents a quality life. It has an environment of conventional to modern type of living--from farms, quiet parks, ranches, horse stables and trails to large apartment and condominium complexes, large estates and industrial areas. The community serves everything you need; social, mental, intellectual, economical, and medical as well as emotional needs.

Facts and trivia:
Did you know that the first white explorers came into the Chatsworth area on Saturday, August 5, 1769? They were led by Gaspar de Portola. The journey was recorded in the diary of Fray Juan Crespi. Did you know that in 1834, the Mexican government ordered the sale of all mission lands? As a result, a few years later, Chatsworth was divided - the Eastern part became Rancho San Fernando and the Western part became part of the Simi land grant. The border line went down the center of Andora Avenue.
