History
Century City is an independent community that lies in the core of west side of Los Angeles in the state of California, United States. With ten million square feet of office spaces in a land of 176 acres, Century City is recognized as the central business district of the area.
During the early decades of the 20 th century, Century City was merely a parcel of not fully developed land owned by the silent film cowboy star, Tom Mix. The land was located between two country roads; Pico and Santa Monica Boulevard. Century City by that time was an area with oil drilling and hoisting frameworks and low rolling grasslands.
By 1925, Tom Mix decided to sell his private ranch to the film studio owner, William Fox. From its overcrowded quarters in Hollywood, Fox moved his film studio to the undeveloped area in the western part of Los Angeles. Fox Film Corporation, during its business downfall, was sold to Danny Zanuck, a movie tycoon. Zanuck then formed 20 th Century Fox in 1935. Due to the troubles following World War II, Century City started life in response to financial and economical crisis that affected a lot of film companies. The Century Fox studio then needed to raise capital, so it carried out a master plan development from Welton Becket Associates, which was revealed at a major press event on the western backlot by 1957. The first building, Century City Gateway West was completely built by 1963, followed by Century Plaza Hotel built by the renowned architect Minoru Yamasaki in 1966. The hotel was part of the original 1960s Century City blueprints. Another construction was also designed by Minoru Yamasaki with two 44-story triangular-shaped towers known as the Century Plaza Towers which became an instant showpiece, completed in 1975. After the lifting of earthquake-related height restrictions by early 1960s, some of the first tall buildings in Los Angeles were first built in Century City.
