Camarillo can be found in Ventura County in the southern part of California in United States of America. Camarillo extends along the Ventura Freeway (Route 101) which is considered the city’s main thoroughfare. It is in the eastern Oxnard Plain, with Conejo Valley to the east, Santa Susana Mountains to the north, and Santa Monica Mountains to the south. Camarillo has a total area of 49.1 square kilometers with 49 square kilometers of land and 0.1 square kilometer of water.
It was by early1820’s, when Mexico gained independence from Spain. California allied itself with Mexico. By 1824, the Mexican land grant system was liberalized. Jose Ruis, who created Rancho Calleguas was one who availed of the land grants. He sells the land to Juan Camarillo who had two sons, Adolfo and Juan. The land was named after Adolfo Camarillo, because Calleguas was difficult to pronounce. Camarillo was rich in agricultural resources. Lemon, orange and walnut groves are the main products of the city. The State Mental Hospital was also built to cure persons suffering from mental illness. Houses were also built up to the north and south of town center. By late 1950’s Ventura Freeway was completely constructed, resulting to a trouble-free trip to the town of Camarillo. This gave way to career opportunities for the people of Camarillo. Rapid growth of Camarillo soon took place. Houses were built with prices ranging from 14,000 dollars to 65,000 dollars for luxurious homes in the surrounding Las Posas Hills. Due to the productive growth of Camarillo, it became a city in 1964. General Plan and building codes were created as guidelines to make Camarillo a pleasant place to work and live. Fifteen percent of the land of Camarillo located in the north-eastern corner was also developed by Pardee Homes which was called Mission Oaks.
Camarillo is a primarily residential community with most of its residences traveling to a nearby city or town for their livelihood. Having a temperate climate with mild ocean breezes makes Camarillo a great place to live. Residents enjoy over 300 days of sunshine a year and an average rainfall of 13 inches which occurs mostly from the month of November to February. Being close to ocean gives Camarillo hazy morning breeze during spring and early summer. Snow takes place above the 4000 foot level in the mountains to the north of the city during winter months. Camarillo has a population of 57,077 residents according to 2000 census. This includes 80.66 percent White, 1.5 percent African American, 0.52 percent Native American, 7.23 percent Asian, 0.20 percent Pacific Islander, and 6.32 from other races, and 3.57 percent from two or more races.
Transportation in Camarillo is served by three public transit bus services. These are Dial-A-Ride, Fixed Route and VISTA service. The city also provides an economic and convenient service through Camarillo Area Transit. Dial-A-Ride operates like a cab service. VISTA, on the other hand, is a countywide service which connects Camarillo with thousand Oaks, Oxnard and Ventura. Residents of Camarillo seeking for a quality education have several options in choosing the right school for students. This includes Mesa Union, Pleasant Valley and Somis Union School Districts which offer elementary through intermediate education.
Public schools like Adolfo Camarillo High School located in Mission Oaks and Rio Mesa High School also serve the city. Seventeen private schools can also be found in the greater Camarillo area. The Ventura Superintendent of Schools Office assures a complete and functional portal to educational resources. The location of some of California’s most highly regarded universities, community colleges, and private institutions makes it convenient for Camarillo residents to meet their educational needs.
In addition, schools like La Verne College in Oxnard and West Coast University in Camarillo offer specialized education for working adults. Camarillo also provides a great place to relax and play. The residents have a wide range of recreational options to choose from. These include five community parks and 16 neighborhood parks located in the city with indoor public swimming pool. Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District offers sports programs to youth and adults. Six public and ten private golf courses within a 20 mile area are also found in the city of Camarillo. Some of the Camarillo’s attractions also include Constitution Park which is located north of Ventura Freeway, adjacent to Camarillo City Hall at the intersection of Carmen Drive and Paseo Camarillo. This is the only park operated by the City of Camarillo. Shopping malls are also present in Camarillo; these include the popular Camarillo Premium Outlets which has 125 fine outlet stores. Community-oriented shopping centers are also provided for a specialized shopping experience. The old fashioned Farmer’s Market is another feature of Camarillo which takes place every Saturday morning on Ventura Boulevard. Another attraction of Camarillo includes theaters. The city has a contemporary movie theater featuring 12 screens, as well as a smaller theater with three screens for film enthusiasts who are interested in foreign feature films.
Camarillo is also rich in culture.
