History
A land of verdant green grass, deep majestic canyons and rolling hills make Brentwood a place with stunning scenery. It is located in West side of Los Angeles California in the United States of America with Zip code 90049, located west of 405, between University of California, Los Angeles and Santa Monica. Brentwood is an area along the length of north Santa Monica Freeway and a community located at the bottom of Santa Monica Mountains. It was a land division of Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica.
During 1781 (the same year when Los Angeles was founded) the King of Spain made a proclamation with the people of what would in the future be Brentwood. This proclamation effectively gave a grant of certain parcels of land to his workers as a job loan. The parcel of land was for the use of the land for an unspecified period of time. Francisco Sepulveda, one of the king’s soldiers, was granted use of the land in the name of the king. Sepulveda was granted a staggeringly vast tract of land measuring an approximate 30,000 acres. The property was called the Rancho San Vicente y Santa Monica (the Ranch of Saint Vicente and Saint Monica). Francisco Sepulveda could use the said land in the name of the king for as long as Sepulveda served the banner of Spain. Sepulveda petitioned the government of Mexico for confirmation to the title of property during 1839. By 1872, Sepulveda turned over the property for $55, 000 in gold coin to Robert S. Baker.
Senator John Paul Jones also owned properties during that time. Robert S. Baker together with Senator Jones decided to sell a considerable part of their property to Gilles and Fleming by 1904.
Soon thereafter, Gilles had signed some agreements which allowed E. H. Harraman of the Southern Pacific Railroad to extend his credit. Harraman gave him an electric car lane in return. The electric car lane ran beginning from Oregon Ave. and Sawtelle, going to Purdue and crossing over the Pacific Branch of National Soldiers’ Home, swinging into the median of San Vicente Boulevard and running west all the way to the ocean.
These resulted in dividing Gilless’ property into subdivisions. Brentwood Park was one of the first subdivisions formed from Gilless’ property in 1906. Other areas were soon built after Brentwood Park. Brentwood became one of the most productive neighborhoods in Los Angeles through its bountiful croplands in agriculture. In order to preserve their agricultural resources, agricultural programs were established.
The topography of Brentwood is divided into two: North of Sunset Boulevard which has scenery by the Santa Monica Mountains, and the south of Sunset Boulevard which has underground springs flowing along the Indian springs and the Gully.
Development of the land consists of planting date palms and coral trees. These can be seen in San Vicente Boulevard and Bundy Drive.
