History
Atlanta can be found at the southeastern part of the United States, the largest city and state capital of Georgia, located in the US. Founded in 1837 and named Terminus, it was briefly known as Marthasville around 10 years or a decade before The Civil War. Marthasville was renamed as Atlanta a few years later and had the makings of a real town with a town newspaper, a courthouse, railroads, hotels and schools. It is also the top most populated city in Georgia and the chief commercial center of the southeastern part of the United States. The most economically important cities in the southeast are Charlotte, Birmingham and Miami together with Atlanta.
Atlanta is a city which consists of twelve districts. The city is run by a mayor and a city council composed of 15 representatives. There is one representative from each of the twelve districts, and three more representing no particular district
The council, as a legislative body can pass a bill. The mayor may veto or reject this bill, but the council can override this veto or rejection with a two-thirds majority vote.
Since Atlanta is the state capital of Georgia, most of Georgia’s state government is situated in the city. Even the Georgia’s State Capitol, which houses the General Assembly, is found in Atlanta. The building, with a dome made of gold from Dahlonega, Georgia, was constructed in 1886.
William T. Sherman was born on February 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio . During the American Civil War, Sherman was the general in the United States Army who placed Atlanta under siege for a number of months time. Atlanta surrendered on September 2. Sherman ordered the city evacuated and all public buildings of potential use to the confederacy shattered. Only 400 structures were left standing, when Sherman began his march to the sea and left Atlanta a ruined town when they left.
Atlanta has a very wide range of temperatures. Having four different seasons, springs and falls are long, giving a short time for summer and winter. During summer, the temperature could reach 100 oF, even if summers are humid, actual temperatures may feel a little lower than they may feel, with about 90°F (32°C) in late July. Winter could bring snowfall most of the time. Afternoon thunderstorms are usual during summer, while rainfall is high in late winter and early spring. Throughout the year rainfalls occur abundantly. Cities in the US with greater rainfall include Florida, Louisiana, New Orleans and Miami. Atlanta is rather cool compared to other places in the southern part of the United States. Tourists often visit Atlanta during spring and autumn.
Everywhere it is well known that “Peachtree Street” means Atlanta. Traditionally, Atlanta developed on a place inhabited by the Creek people. The Peachtree Street wasn’t really named for a peach tree. It came from a sizeable Creek community called Standing Pitch Tree behind a tall lone tree. The Creek people used pine trees with fresh sap, also known as pitch, for dignifying vows and treaties. Later on the “pitch tree” came to be pronounced as “peach tree”, probably by mistake or by confusion of sounds to people who spoke English. Peaches are indeed so widely spread in northern Georgia and Atlanta area, so that Georgia became known as the “Peach State”. But the name “Peachtree Street” did not come from any historical peach tree in Atlanta.
Over the years, the city's 37-mile Main Street has tied the town together - starting at the city jail, following a ridge north through downtown and Midtown to Buckhead where it curves northeast to Chamblee and Doraville, to cross Gwinnett County to the Hall County line.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (IATA: ATL, ICAO: KATL), serves Atlanta, located about 10 miles south of downtown. This airport is among the worlds busiest, based on passenger traffic and aircraft traffic, giving service to many incoming and outgoing national and international destinations. It has the usual complement of taxi ranks, airport shuttle vans and car hire offices, provided for expedient travel to and from the airport.
The public-transit system of Atlanta is the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority or MARTA, which operates the rail and bus system within Dekalb and Fulton Counties in Atlanta. The southern branch of the MARTA rail system has its last stop at Hartsfield airport. This station provides a good, direct and economic way of getting to locations in downtown, midtown or Northern Atlanta. Taxi ranks in most MARTA stations help in the completion of the journey. To give added convenience, some hotels, especially in the Sandy Springs area, have free shuttles that fetch passengers from the nearest MARTA station upon request on the telephone.
Other Counties namely, Clayton, Cobb and Gwinnett each run distinct and independent transit authorities, but employing buses only and no trains.
Though many transit authorities are widely available, numerous commuters traveling around Atlanta and its borders use their private vehicles as their principal means of transportation. This can be primarily due to the fact that Georgia has had one of the lowest excise taxes on gasoline in the United States.
