History
Anaheim, meaning Ana of the nearby Sta. Ana River and Heim meaning home, was established in 1857 by German families. George Hansen being a founding member, surveyed the original 200 acres which now includes Anaheim’s downtown area, bounded by North, South, East and West streets. This was the second largest City in Orange County, tenth largest in California and fifty-ninth largest city in the nation. It was developed into an industrial center which boasts eight theme lands and sixty adventure rides. By July 17, 1955 Disneyland Resort was constructed in Harbor Boulevard, Anaheim. This was consisting of Disneyland Park and Disney’s California Adventure Park. This results into a large tourist attraction which gave opportunity for Anaheim to grow into a major city.
The City of Anaheim was incorporated by an act of the California State Legislature on February 10, 1870. The charter of the City of Anaheim was revoked by an act of the California State Legislature on March 7, 1872. The Town of Anaheim on the other hand was incorporated on December 6, 1876 by act of the Legislature. By March 13, 1883, the Town of Annaheim was recognized as the City of Anaheim after an Act of the California State Legislature and was approved by Aniheim voters on June 4, 1888.
By 1960, tourism and sports world influenced the city even further, capitalizing on its thriving growth which increased the demands on city services. New libraries as well as police stations were built. These also results in rapid growth of population.
The city government of Anaheim functions under a council-manager administration. Five nonpartisan members in a city council who employ a professional city manager to run everyday operations settle the city’s legislative authority. Voters elect the mayor who serves as the presiding officer and four other members of the city council to serve four-year terms. The mayor may serve two terms and an individual may serve a maximum of two terms as city council member under Anaheim’s term limits. The elections for mayor and the two council seats are elected during the intervening even-numbered years, while the other two council seats are held in years divisible by four.
